What is the difference between herringbone and chevron flooring?
Herringbone is laid with each plank at a right angle to the next, creating a broken zigzag pattern with a straight-cut end on each piece. Chevron uses planks cut at an angle so they meet in a continuous point, giving a more uniform, arrow-like line. Both need careful setting-out, but chevron generally requires more precise cutting since every joint has to align perfectly.
How long does it take to fit herringbone flooring?
Timing depends on the size of the area and the condition of the subfloor, since a floor needing significant levelling takes longer than one that's already flat. As a general guide, a single room typically takes a few days including subfloor preparation, while larger or commercial spaces take longer.
Is LVT or wood-effect flooring as durable as solid wood?
Good quality LVT is genuinely hard-wearing and copes well with everyday household use, underfloor heating and areas prone to moisture, where solid wood is less suitable. Solid or engineered wood offers a different look and can be sanded and refinished over time, which LVT cannot, so the right choice depends on the room and how it's used.
How do I choose the right flooring fitter?
Ask what preparation is included in the price, since a herringbone floor is only as good as the subfloor underneath it, and cutting corners on preparation is where problems usually start. Photos of previous herringbone or chevron work are worth checking closely, since an off-square pattern is very obvious once you know to look for it.
